The two greatest Captains in Starfleet
William Shatner was born on today. He is 75 years old today. I’m glad that Bill and I are friends. That photo up there shows the two greatest Captains in Starfleet.
Did William Shatner change the world playing Captain Kirk? Yes. Star Trek looks towards the future, as do I. A positive future during the Cold War was unheard of in the 1960’s. Star Trek showed that humanity, once we have grown out of our infancy, would be greater united rather than divided. And it showed that we could all work together for the common good.
Cell phones, laptops, PDAs, VCRs, the internet and even the iPod can be traced back to Star Trek. Fans of Star Trek saw a cool gadget and had to make something that cool for us all to enjoy.
I only wished that cell phones didn’t work in cars, theatres, concerts, in the check out line or schools. In Star Trek, they had restrained when they used their communicators. I can only image when someone makes a holodeck that works. The holodeck could mean the end of humanity if we use it like how most of us use the cell phone. Or Myspace. Oh the Humanity!!!!
So Bill, Happy Birthday! From one Captain to another, “It was the best of times and the worst of times.” No hidden meanings, other than Happy Birthday. And thanks for giving me hope for the future.
