The Journey Back To Physical Media

The Journey Back To Physical Media

The Journey Back To Physical Media

Streaming media is now the norm for us to consume music and film. At one point, you needed a CD or a DVD to listen to music or watch a movie at home. Before that, there were cassettes, records, and VHS tapes. But now, practically every song, television show, and film are available online. Or are they?

I am sure there is an old film you remember watching as a kid, you are going to try to find it on a streaming platform, and it is unavailable. However, you could still buy a DVD or a VHS tape to watch the film. For the most part, most albums are available streaming somewhere on the Internet. However, there is that rare record that never got converted to an unavailable digital medium.

It might be a fun challenge to give up streaming media for a period of time. Maybe a week or a month, perhaps even longer. Would you still be able to watch television shows and films you would like to view on a physical medium? Possibly, you would have to make compromises and watch something you can find or already have the physical media to view or listen to.

That week or month may prove to be very interesting. When viewing television, whatever movie or television show is showing is usually just watched. Even if the movie is halfway through the showing, audiences start where watching where they are at with little complaining. If you have seen the film or television show before, you can remember what happened at the beginning. On the other hand, if you never saw that show before, you are smart enough to figure out what events occurred before you turned the television on.

Filling in the blanks is something our brain does instinctively. Since we can watch anything on demand, filling in the blanks is not utilized as much now. In life, there are many blanks that we need to fill in. And only through experience, creativity, and imagination can they be resolved. Much like any other muscle, your brain needs mysteries to solve. These skills make you sharper when real life problems occur. Having the foresight to practice these skills will lead to a more productive and contented life.

So, make it a challenge to yourself only to watch films or listen to music on a physical medium. Try that for a week or a month and see what you think. Watch television wherever it starts. Do the same thing with the radio when you are driving. Undoubtedly, you will rediscover songs, television shows, and movies you forgot about or never knew existed.
